The GIOVIASCA variety, also known as Gioviasca di Villar Pellice, is a local traditional landrace that developed in the Pellice Valley of the Piedmont region in northwestern Italy. It originated as a result of centuries of folk breeding and selection in a specific geographical zone.
The fruits of the variety are distinguished by their large size. They are used for sale on the fresh market and in the manufacturing of confectionery products, including glazed chestnuts. The variety has been studied in scientific papers on the genetic and morphological characterization of chestnuts in Piedmont.
