Variety description

10 August 2026

The GARRONE NERO DI BOVES variety, also known as Caron nero, is a local cultivar originating from Piedmont. The fruits are large, numbering 90–100 per kilogram, and have an asymmetric shape with dark brown skin adorned with characteristic stripes and grooves. The interior of the fruit is rarely divided by septa.

The fruits ripen in early October and possess a distinct taste and aroma, allowing them to be used fresh or for the production of delicacies, including marrons glacés. Currently, the variety is practically not used in commercial horticulture due to its high vulnerability to ink disease and the chestnut gall wasp; therefore, its preservation is carried out in specialized arboretums.
