The Sardonne variety, also known as Commune Sardonne, belongs to the species Castanea sativa. It is the result of centuries of traditional selection and is traditionally grown in France. The fruits of the variety are medium-sized and possess high taste characteristics, due to which they have been historically used for preparing desserts, in particular candied chestnuts.
Trees of this variety are susceptible to ink disease caused by pathogens of the genus Phytophthora. Due to insufficient yields compared to modern hybrids, the variety is being gradually displaced from commercial plantings by more productive forms adapted to mechanized harvesting.
