The Viana variety is autochthonous to the Portuguese region, in particular, the island of Terceira. The fruits of the variety are valued for their sweet taste and size, with two categories distinguished by caliber: larger Viana grada and smaller Viana miúda. The Viana grada variety is considered early, as harvesting begins in the first half of October.

The tree is well adapted to local growing conditions and is capable of reaching a significant height, which is regulated by agrotechnical methods. Like other varieties of Castanea sativa, Viana is susceptible to blight, ink disease, as well as the impact of the chestnut weevil and the chestnut gall wasp.
