The variety is the result of centuries of folk selection, rather than a commercial program, and is distributed mainly in the Piedmont and Lombardy regions, as well as in southern Switzerland. It is recognized as promising for the conservation of genetic diversity within the framework of chestnut grove restoration projects.

The fruits of the variety are capable of being stored for a long time while remaining inside the involucre, which allows them to be consumed fresh for several months. In addition to food use, the biomass of this variety, including leaves and fruit husks, has a high content of polyphenols, tannins, and flavonoids.
