The variety is a hybrid of the mandarin Citrus reticulata and the grapefruit Citrus paradisi. It is classified as a tangelo and was developed within the IVIA institute's breeding program aimed at improving the quality of citrus fruits.
In public materials, the GREGAL variety is mentioned as an object of commercial cultivation. Despite its official status, detailed morphological descriptions, data on ripening periods, or resistance to diseases are not freely available, which distinguishes it from other tetraploid varieties from the same breeding program.
