The variety is a natural hybrid discovered in Jamaica. The name is a combination of the words orange, tangerine, and unique. The nucellar variety was obtained from seeds to sanitize planting material from viruses.

Trees are distinguished by a vigorous growth rate, a dense crown, and the presence of small thorns. Fruits are large, weighing 200–250 g, with a slightly flattened shape. The pulp is juicy, bittersweet with honey notes; seeds may be present in the fruits.

Ortanique belongs to late-maturing varieties; ripening occurs in February–March. Fruits can remain on the tree for a long time without loss of quality. The variety is sensitive to cold and possesses resistance to a number of diseases due to the firm, leathery rind of the fruits.
