The plant is a shrub with a characteristic leaf coloration. The foliage is purple with a narrow green border along the edge; some descriptions also indicate the presence of a silvery-green hue.

The variety is used as a decorative-foliage houseplant or for landscaping. Post-harvest quality studies have shown that treatment with growth regulators, such as 6-benzylaminopurine, is effective for extending the shelf life of cut foliage.
