The plant is a shrub with a dense, spreading, often umbrella-shaped crown, reaching 2–3 meters in height (maximum up to 4–5 meters). Its main feature is strongly twisted, serpentine shoots, which look striking in winter and early spring before the leaves emerge.
The leaves are large, broadly rounded, twisted, and corrugated. Upon emerging, they have a rich purple-red color; in summer, they turn green, retaining a burgundy hue on young shoots, and in autumn, they can acquire crimson tones. The fruits are edible and ripen in the mid-late period from late August to October.
The variety is winter hardy, withstanding frosts down to -34 °C; however, young plants require covering during the first years after planting. Resistance to diseases and pests is moderate; infection by powdery mildew, brown spot, weevils, and aphids is possible.
