The variety is an evergreen compact shrub, sometimes classified in the microphylla group. The plant reaches a height of 50–60 cm with a width of about 25 cm. The leaves are small, oval or broad-lanceolate, with serrated margins. A characteristic feature is the bright golden young leaves, which are resistant to sunburn.
The plant's flowers are small, greenish in hue, and bloom in late spring or early summer. The shrub is hardy within USDA zones 6b–9, withstanding temperatures down to -12...-15 °C. The variety is shade-tolerant, adapts well to various soils provided there is drainage, and tolerates pruning.
