The variety is a winter barley, its pedigree includes the forms (Malta x Volla) x (Tria x Emir). Initially, the variety was intended for malting purposes.

In agronomic and phytopathological research, Trixi is mentioned as a genotype susceptible to Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaMMV) and serves as a control sample. The variety was also examined in scientific studies as an example demonstrating certain performance indicators in competition with weeds.
