The variety belongs to the group of plants derived from Hydrangea macrophylla, Hydrangea serrata, or their hybrids. Based on morphological traits, it is classified as a mophead-type inflorescence, distinguished by a more restrained appearance compared to classic large-flowered varieties.

The variety name indicates a connection to the Japanese species Izu-no-hana, which in its natural habitat on the Izu Peninsula has a lacecap-type inflorescence with double sterile flowers. The Temari modification is characterized by a change in the inflorescence shape to globular.
