The variety belongs to the 'lacecap' inflorescence type, where the central part is formed by small fertile flowers and the periphery by large sterile flowers. The name 'Shiro-Fuiri' reflects the characteristic feature of the plant—the presence of variegation with a white pattern.

In botanical sources, the variety is mentioned as Hydrangea serrata 'Shiro-Fuiri' or Hydrangea macrophylla forma normalis 'Shiro-fuiri-gakuajisai'. In the Japanese tradition, the name is often descriptive for variegated forms of hydrangea; official agrotechnical characteristics of the variety have not been established.
