The main distinctive feature of the Yellowleaf variety (also known as Sun Goddess, Lemon Zest) is the change in foliage color throughout the season. The bright golden spring color gradually transitions to chartreuse. The plant forms mophead-type spherical inflorescences; flowering occurs on the previous year's shoots.

The shrub reaches about 120 cm in height and width. The variety is heat-loving and, like most representatives of the species Hydrangea macrophylla, requires covering in temperate climates to protect flower buds from freezing during the winter period.
