The plant is a deciduous shrub reaching a height of about 1–1.2 meters. Its key morphological feature is narrow, dark green, lanceolate leaves. The inflorescences have a flat lacecap shape and consist of central fertile flowers and outer sterile flowers, which are white in color.
The leaves of the plant contain phyllodulcin, a substance with an intense sweet taste, which allows for its use in preparing the traditional Japanese drink amacha. The crop is characterized by a stable biochemical profile and high resistance to powdery mildew. The flowering period occurs from June to July.
