In botanical taxonomy, Acuminata is not an independent variety, but belongs to the complex of forms of the species Hydrangea serrata. Historically, this name was used to describe natural variations of the plant and may be found in catalogs as a synonym for the form Intermedia.
The plant is a shrub 0.9 to 1.5 m in height with an upright or rounded habit. The inflorescences are of the lacecap type: central fertile flowers are surrounded at the edges by larger sterile ones.
