The tree reaches a height of 18–25 meters and possesses a loose, umbrella-shaped crown. The leaves are odd-pinnate, 20–40 cm long, and consist of 5–7 leaflets. The fruits are spherical in shape with a diameter of 3.5–5 cm. The primary distinguishing feature is the blood-red or mottled coloration of the shell and the dull pinkish-red color of the kernel skin.
In agronomic literature, Rubra is more often considered a historical designation for a group of plants with red pigment rather than a single commercial cultivar with regulated yield or winter hardiness indicators. In terms of productivity and fruit size, such forms are often inferior to standard industrial cultivars.
