The Ötztaler variety occupies an intermediate position between oilseed and fiber flax varieties. The plant has a height exceeding that of oilseed flax, but lower than modern fiber flax varieties. The flowers are predominantly blue with an admixture of white.
The variety is characterized by early maturity, which allows it to be grown in areas with a short growing season. Seed yield and fiber yield are significantly lower than those of specialized high-yielding varieties. It is used primarily as a genetic resource and an element of cultural heritage.
