The Zebra variety is a tetraploid (4n) Italian ryegrass. It was bred in Switzerland by treating the original diploid material of the Oryx variety with colchicine. The variety has a genetic relationship with the Morunga variety, originating from the same breeding material.

The plant has erect shoots. The variety is intended for intensive agricultural use as a forage crop.
