Variety description

The variety is a deciduous shrub or small tree 4.5–6 meters in height with a compact multi-stemmed crown 2–3 meters wide. The flowers, up to 15 cm in diameter, have dense petals and a dark plum-purple color.

Flowering occurs in early spring before the leaves emerge; a second wave is possible in mid-summer. The plant is capable of blooming at an early age, is characterized by USDA hardiness zone 5–9, and requires wind-protected locations with moist, well-drained soils.
