Magnolia variety «Black Tulip» is a hybrid of magnolias «Iolanthe» and «Vulcan». The adult plant reaches a height of 4–6 meters, having a pyramidal crown at a young age, which becomes more rounded and spreading over the years. Leaves are small, green, ovate or elliptical in shape.
Flowers with a diameter of 12–18 cm possess dense fleshy petals of a dark wine color and practically do not open completely. Flowering occurs early in spring before the appearance of leaves; under favorable weather conditions, repeat flowering is possible in June.
The variety is winter-hardy (withstands up to -27°C, zones 5–7), prefers sunny or semi-shaded locations protected from the wind. It requires moist, fertile, well-drained soils with a neutral or acidic reaction. The root system is superficial, sensitive to waterlogging and mechanical damage.
