The name "Schläfer" reflects a biological trait of the variety—very late flowering, which provides protection against spring frosts. In its youth, the tree grows relatively slowly, but growth becomes vigorous at a mature age. The variety is considered very old, with the first description dating back to 1760.

This is a winter, low-maintenance variety resistant to diseases and pests. The fruits have a sweet-spicy taste, are characterized by good keeping quality, and are suitable for fresh consumption, as well as for cooking and processing into juice or cider.
