The variety originated as a chance seedling in Hawthornden near Edinburgh. The tree is winter-hardy, with a wide-spreading crown, the height of which varies depending on the rootstock. The plant bears fruit early and regularly, distinguished by high productivity.

The fruits are medium to large in size, round or flat in shape, with greenish-yellow skin, sometimes with a pale blush. The flesh is white or cream, fine-grained, firm and juicy, possessing a wine-acid flavor. The harvest is collected in mid-September, and the fruits retain their consumer properties until January.

The variety is prone to powdery mildew and is susceptible to scab in warm conditions. The literature mentions synonyms such as Lincolnshire Pippin and Lord Kingston. This variety should not be confused with the New Hawthornden and Winter Hawthornden varieties.
