Fruits of the Api group are predominantly small or medium in size, with a round or slightly flattened shape. The flesh is white, juicy and crisp, with a balanced sweet-and-sour taste. The skin of the Api Noir variety acquires a dark red, almost black color upon ripening, and the Api Etoile variety is distinguished by a five-sided fruit shape resembling a star.
Trees are moderately vigorous, compact, with a height of 3–5 meters. The varieties belong to winter or autumn-winter maturity groups; harvest maturity of the fruits occurs in September–October. Fructification can be biennial, and the trees require the selection of pollinators.
Varieties of the group possess good winter hardiness, while the classic Api is susceptible to scab, whereas Api Noir is distinguished by high resistance to diseases. The fruits are characterized by long keeping quality and are often used not only for fresh consumption but also as a decorative element.
