The variety is the result of crossing the Renet Ananasny and Ribston Pippin varieties, with the possible involvement of the Gdansk Apple Kant variety. It is intended primarily for fresh consumption and is suitable for culinary use and juice production. There is a mutant form, Roter Berlepsch, with a more intense red fruit coloration.
The tree reaches a height of 4 to 8 meters; the crown has a rounded or broadly conical shape. Harvesting begins in October, consumer ripeness of the fruit occurs in November, and the shelf life extends until March. Fruits are medium-sized, rounded or flat-rounded, and often ribbed.
The variety is demanding regarding growing conditions and performs best in a temperate, warm climate. It is sensitive to late spring frosts and, under unfavorable conditions, is susceptible to fruit tree canker, moniliosis, and late blight. A tendency toward biennial bearing is noted.
