The variety is named after the German landowner and pomologist Hermann von Berlepsch. Historically, it became widely distributed in Germany, particularly in the Rhineland region, where it is still cultivated today.

The fruits are described as large, with an attractive red coloration. Mutations of this variety exist, for example, «Roter Berlepsch». The fruits are used in the food industry, specifically in the production of apple puree and must due to the high sugar content.
