The variety is an old apple tree that became widespread in the Netherlands. The fruits have a thick, smooth, greenish-yellow skin, almost entirely covered with a carmine-red blush, sometimes with darker stripes and spots. The whitish-yellow flesh is juicy, with a sweet, wine-like flavor and a spicy aroma.

In terms of ripening time, the fruits are classified as late-autumn and can be stored until January. The tree is characterized by early bearing, regular cropping, and good yields. The variety is hardy and tolerates winter cold well, but prefers fertile soils and wind-protected locations for cultivation.

The name Bentleber Rosenapfel is not unique and is used as a historical synonym alongside names such as Danziger Kantapfel, Lorenzapfel, Liebesapfel, and Calville de Danzig.
