The fruits have a shiny waxy skin of a pale yellow color with a faded red blush and yellow lenticels. On the shaded side, the skin is brownish with gray reticulated traces of russeting, which often extend to the shoulders of the fruit. The tree is distinguished by a long and thin stalk, set in a narrow deep basin with russeting.

The variety is traditionally used as a table apple for fresh consumption; historical sources also mentioned its use for medicinal purposes. The name Borsdorfer may refer to an entire group of related varieties, including such cultivars as Angelner Borsdorfer or Thurgauer Borsdorfer.
