The name encompasses a series of historical varieties, the most well-known of which are Calville Blanc d'Hiver and Calville Neige. Trees of this group range from medium-sized to vigorous with broadly rounded drooping or broadly pyramidal crowns.

Fruits of the Calvilla group varieties possess pronounced ribbing, tender juicy flesh, and a sweet-and-sour or wine-sweet taste. Most representatives belong to winter or early-winter maturity groups and have a universal purpose, including fresh consumption and processing.

Winter hardiness of the varieties in this group is rated as high. Resistance to diseases, in particular to scab, can vary depending on the specific form.
