The variety has been known since the period before the 1700s and is of Russian or Ukrainian origin. In the early 19th century, it became widespread in Europe, where it was associated with the group of large-fruited apples of the 'Aport' type. The tree is vigorous and forms a spreading crown.

Fruits are large or very large, ranging in shape from flat-round to conical. The color upon ripening is yellow with a red blush or stripes. The flesh is white, juicy, and the taste is characterized as sweet and sour with wine or spicy notes. The variety is considered culinary/dessert and is well-suited for processing.

The ripening period occurs between September and October. The variety has satisfactory storage indicators but is not a late-winter variety. In modern commercial cultivation, it is encountered less frequently, having been displaced by more productive or disease-resistant varieties.
