The rootstock was obtained by crossing M.16 and M.9. Trees on it reach 40–60% of the size of a tree on a seedling rootstock, ensuring early entry into fruiting and high yield. In the first years after planting, trees often require the installation of support structures for fixation in the soil.

The rootstock is extremely susceptible to fire blight, crown rot, and woolly apple aphid. It is not recommended for planting in waterlogged areas due to the high risk of rot development. There are virus-free forms of the rootstock, for example, M.26 EMLA. It is widely used in intensive commercial horticulture.
