Trees grafted on this rootstock reach approximately 55–60% of the size of a tree on seedling rootstock. In terms of vigor, the rootstock occupies an intermediate position between M.9 and M.7. The plant is winter hardy, however, it requires good soil drainage and the installation of supports during the first years of life, despite better anchorage compared to weaker dwarf rootstocks.

The rootstock is susceptible to fire blight, crown rot, and woolly apple aphid. A characteristic feature is the formation of numerous aerial roots on the trunk. There are virus-free forms of the rootstock, such as M.26 EMLA and M.26 NAKB, which may differ slightly from the original clone in vigor.
