The M.27 rootstock is characterized by very low vigor, resulting in tree development with a height of 1.2–1.8 meters. Apple trees grafted onto it are noted for early fruit bearing and high productivity. The root system of the rootstock is brittle, making the presence of a trellis or post mandatory throughout the plant's life.

This rootstock exhibits relative resistance to root rots but is susceptible to fire blight and has moderate winter hardiness. It is not prone to producing root suckers and is most often used in private gardening, container cultivation, or as an interstock in nurseries.
