The group of varieties has a long history; mentions of it appear in documents dating back to 1595. The name derives from the shape of the fruit, which resembles an animal's muzzle. There are varieties such as Musona rossa striata and Musona verde; synonyms including Musabò, Muso di Bue, La Poma, and Musun are also known.
The fruits mature in the second or third ten-day period of September and can be stored until March-May. The flesh is crisp, aromatic, with a sweet-sour taste. The varieties are suitable for fresh consumption, preparing desserts, juices, and cider. The trees are adapted to temperate climates and are resistant to spring frosts due to flowering in mid-April.

Green indicates countries where the variety is listed in the national catalogue and its seeds are authorized for sale. Expired registrations are marked separately: the variety was previously admitted, but sale is no longer permitted.
