The fruits are of medium to large size, round-oblate in shape, sometimes with ribbing. The skin is green, becoming greenish-yellow upon ripening, sometimes with a light brownish-pink blush, pronounced lenticels, and russeting around the stalk. The flesh is yellowish, firm, crisp, and juicy. The taste is complex, sweet-and-sour.
The tree is of moderate vigor with a spreading crown, fruiting primarily at the tips of the shoots. The variety is late-ripening; the harvest is collected in October. The fruits require storage for 1–2 months to achieve optimal flavor qualities and retain their properties for up to 5 months under refrigerated conditions.
The variety is versatile: it is consumed fresh, is suitable for baking, making sauces, purees, and cider production. Existing differences between the Green Newtown and Yellow Newtown forms are often attributed to the influence of the climatic conditions of the cultivation region.
1 jurisdiction
Green indicates countries where the variety is listed in the national catalogue and its seeds are authorized for sale. Expired registrations are marked separately: the variety was previously admitted, but sale is no longer permitted.
