Petit amer is an old industrial apple variety, the fruits of which are not intended for fresh consumption. They ripen in the autumn and are characterized by a high content of sugars and tannins, which provides the juice with the characteristic taste, aroma, and color necessary for the production of high-quality cider.

The tree is characterized by high growth vigor, hardiness, and fertility. The crown is well-branched, and the branches can have a semi-upright or spreading growth habit. The variety is adapted to the climatic conditions of Normandy and is often used in organic gardening.

In historical pomology, the name Petit amer or Petit amer doux could encompass apple forms with similar characteristics. Studies on cryopreservation of genetic material noted low susceptibility of this genotype to bud regeneration protocols.
