The name Philip Rick originated from the location where a chance seedling was discovered on Philip Rick's farm in New York. Genetically and varietally, this object is identical to the Jonathan variety, which presumably originated from the Esopus Spitzenburg variety.
The Jonathan tree is weak to moderately vigorous with a spreading crown and thin drooping branches. The fruits are medium-sized, round-conical in shape, with smooth thin yellow skin with an intense dark red blush. The flesh is yellowish-white, juicy, with a sweet-and-sour taste and a specific aroma.
The variety is classified as winter; the fruits are consumed from November to April. The crop is susceptible to powdery mildew, scab, canker, fire blight, and physiological Jonathan spot of fruits. Jonathan is a valuable genetic material for breeding modern varieties such as Jonagold, Idared, and Melrose.
