Solaio is an ancient variety of folk selection originating from the province of Siena. In the region, it is included in the registries as a guardian variety of local genetic resources.

Scientific research highlights the variety as a promising functional food product, the parameters of which in terms of polyphenol content and antioxidant activity exceed many commercial apple varieties.
