The variety has been known since before 1600 and is presumed to originate from the vicinity of Maastricht. It has many synonyms in various languages, such as Calville Etoilée, Reinette Étoile, Herzapfel, and Weihnachtsapfel.

The fruits of this variety are often used in processing, for example for juice production. In 2001 in Germany, the variety was selected as the variety of the year for cultivation on traditional standard trees.
