The Suricillo variety originates from the Irpinia territory and is an historical local genotype preserved in old orchards and pastures, rather than a result of artificial breeding. The variety has been studied primarily within the framework of projects for the conservation of biodiversity and genetic resources.

Studies of the variety include comparative analyses of its bio-agronomic and qualitative characteristics, including molecular-genetic identification. Detailed agronomic descriptions, such as yield or disease resistance indicators, are absent in public sources, as the variety is not industrial.
