The name Wachsapfel was applied in historical pomological literature to a number of varieties, such as Gelber Edelapfel, Champagnerrenette, and Zürcher Transparent. It should not be confused with the tropical plant Syzygium samarangense, which is also called the wax apple.

The Gelber Edelapfel variety is a vigorous tree with a broad-pyramidal crown and an autumn ripening period. The fruits are medium to large in size, flat-round, with thin lemon-yellow skin. The light juicy flesh is distinguished by a high vitamin C content and pronounced acidity.

Champagnerrenette is a late-winter variety known for high keeping quality of fruits until the beginning of summer. The medium-sized fruits have smooth waxy skin and wine-acidic flesh flavor. The Zürcher Transparent variety is characterized by whitish-yellow fruits used for preparing mousses.
