The plant is a deciduous tree or large shrub 3.5 to 6 meters in height with a widely spreading crown. Young foliage has a brownish-red or purple hue, eventually turning reddish-bronze or dark green.
Flowering occurs in April–May; the flowers are semi-double, dark pink or purple-red in color. Fruits are small, 1.5–2.5 cm in diameter, flattened-round or conical, red with a brownish tan and waxy bloom, borne on long thin pedicels.
The variety is ornamental; the fruits are small and have a bitter taste, therefore they are not intended for commercial consumption. The plant is characterized by slow growth and belongs to USDA hardiness zone 4.
