The Harrow Red variety was developed as part of the Canadian breeding program at the Harrow Research Station. In literature, it is often mentioned as part of the Harrow series of varieties along with such varieties as Harcot, Hargrand, and Harojoy.

The fruits of this variety possess attractive external characteristics. The variety was included in lists for variety trials and recommended for study in various regions as part of commercial fruit growing projects.
