The Poizat variety belongs to the traditional local cultivars of France. Historically, it was mentioned in the lists of commercial varieties of the 1930s as part of the regional assortment of fruit crops in the Rhône department; however, by the 1960s, plantings of this variety were largely displaced by vineyards.

Open sources lack detailed modern agronomic characteristics of the plant, such as exact height, disease resistance, or yield. Most modern mentions of the name Poizat in scientific literature on stone fruits are associated with the name of the geneticist researcher C. Poizat, rather than with a description of the variety itself.
