The tree is characterized by vigorous growth and is capable of reaching 15–20 meters in height as a standard tree, however, there are also low-stem forms on dwarfing rootstocks. The variety is a historical staple crop of North-West Switzerland.

The fruits are large, round in shape, ripening in July. Upon ripening, they acquire a black-brown color, possess juicy flesh with high sugar content and a pronounced aroma. The primary use is for fresh consumption.

The variety is winter hardy, but sensitive to late spring frosts. There is a noted tendency for the fruits to crack in rainy weather, as well as susceptibility of leaves to red leaf spot (Blakesleyella cerasi).
