Variety description

10 August 2026

The most common representative of the group is the Mora di Vignola variety, known in the Modena area since the late 19th century. Historically, these are vigorous trees 10–14 meters tall; however, modern training methods allow them to be grown as cordons or low bushes.

The medium-sized fruits turn almost black when ripe. The flesh is dark red, tender, very juicy, with a sweet taste, light acidity, and a pronounced aroma. The variety is self-incompatible and requires pollinators.

The fruits are used for fresh consumption, as well as for making jams and compotes. In addition to the most famous variety from Vignola, the name “Ciliegia Mora” is applied to other local populations, such as Mora di Cassano or Mora di Piacenza, which possess individual characteristics.
