The Zuccherina di Bitonto variety has traditionally been grown in Apulia and is known under the synonyms Zuccaro, Zucchero, and Durona zuccherina. The fruits have a heart shape with a wide, deep cavity; their average weight is approximately 7 g. A long, thin peduncle supports the fruit, the skin of which varies from a bright red to a white-pink shade.

The fruit flesh is white-cream, semi-firm, juicy, and sugary. The stone is of medium size and elliptical shape. The ripening period of the variety is classified as mid-late or late and falls between the end of May and the end of June. In several sources, the variety is characterized as self-fertile.
