The variety belongs to the group of old regional sweet cherry varieties widespread in the past in Saxony and Thuringia. In historical pomological literature, there were attempts to identify it with other varieties, but later studies distinguished it as a separate type.

The name Hängende Königskirsche was used as a local designation to distinguish this variety from Altenburger Melonenkirsche. The fruits belong to the group of so-called heart-cherries (Knorpelkirsche), which are characterized by firm flesh and good transportability. The variety is included in genetic diversity conservation programs.
