The variety was bred at the Polli Horticultural Research Centre by crossing the «Krassavitsa» variety with open pollination. Breeding work on the variety was aimed at ensuring high winter hardiness characteristic of fruit crops in this region.
The variety belongs to the self-incompatible category; its genetic type at the S-locus is defined as S3S17. «Tõmmu» is used as a pollinator for other varieties, such as «Polli rubiin», and it requires the selection of suitable partners for cross-pollination.
