The term Kreek refers to a group of fruit trees and shrubs that includes damsons and related species. These are folk-selected plants adapted to the local climate, which often form root suckers and appear as small trees or shrubs.

The fruits of the damson are typically small, with a weight of 11–16 g, have a round or oval shape, and are dark blue or blue-black in color with a waxy bloom. The yellowish pulp has a specific sweet-and-sour or tart taste, making them suitable primarily for home processing, such as making jam or compotes.
